Broadway star Kelli O'Hara lit up the red carpet at the Tony Awards 2018, with a jaw-dropping dress covered in Preciosa crystals. The feather and crystal embroidered tulle gown was created by internationally renowned designer Bibhu Mohapatra, who has previously designed for Michelle Obama and Gwyneth Paltrow among others. This particular piece was taken from his Spring 2018 collection, which is centered around “the untold stories of the traveling woman”, along with a geisha and bondage theme. Of particular interest in this collection are the dramatic drapery, bound waists and necklines that challenge the stereotypical ideas of womenswear. Preciosa crystals feature prominently throughout.
Bibhu Mohapatra has collaborated with Preciosa on multiple occasions; last November he designed and created a doll that was auctioned for charity in New York that was covered in Preciosa crystals. The dress worn by Kelli O’Hara was hand embroidered by artisans from North West India with crystal and light sapphire stones by Preciosa.
The glamorous star-studded annual event took place on the evening of Sunday 10th June at the Radio City Music Hall in New York. Other celebrities in attendance included Robert De Niro, Billy Joel, Amy Schumer and Carey Mulligan.
